Centrifugal Fan CFD Benchmark

Recently, we made a special radial (centrifugal) fan simulation benchmark together with ZVVZ Machinery.

The object of the benchmark was a simulation of the real existing radial fan for which the measurement data are available. The particular fan data and settings are confidential, however the settings are similar to a typical radial fan simulation settings: Radial Fan CFD Simulation

The simulation software is TCFD® (version 16.10) - which is a special CFD workflow. Its numerical solver is based on OpenFOAM.

For a comparison, the same benchmark was simulated using the tools available in standard OpenFOAM, version 3.0.x-4b5e129783d9.

This particular radial fan is quite difficult to simulate. It has a very complicated air flow including a low pressure ratio together with a high flow rate. This combination is very challenging for CFD.

The results are amazing. Here are the key figures.

The benchmark results give at least three outputs:

1. TCFD® results have a very good agreement with the measurement data.

2. In this particular benchmark, the TCFD® results show only a little difference between transient and steady state simulations.

3. In this particular benchmark, the standard OpenFOAM shows poor results.

Altogether, this study clearly proves that OpenFOAM based solutions have very high potential (in the right hands).
